Nathan and Kym had gone through some very heated arguments when it came time to buy their first home. They had very different ideas about what they wanted to buy.
Kym wanted a brand new home. Nathan wanted exactly the opposite, he wanted a very "established" neighborhood and a very "established" home. Kym, when they would talk (argue) about it would say that "established" as he called it, was really code for ancient. He couldn't argue that, he did want an older house. He looked forward to taking an old house and fixing it up, keeping the original style for the exterior and completely modernizing the inside.
So what does a couple do when they are so far apart on what type of house to look at? They agreed to flip a coin, heads was for a brand new house which Kym wanted and tails was the old fixer-upper that Nathan wanted.
"Here we go" said Nathan and he flipped the quarter in the air. Kym whispered over and over "heads, heads, heads" as quickly as she could while the quarter was turning in the air.
Nathan did the same, except he was chanting "tails, tails, tails". The coin landed on tails and Nathan jumped up and down and did a loud "WHOOP!!!!" and fist pump.
Kym said, "Oh fine, a fixer upper it is."
They found a house that had been built over 50 years ago. It was a huge plantation style home with a wrap around porch and rolling grass lawn all around it and off to the right a forest of trees that seemed to never stop. "It's quiet," was Kym's first thought when they saw it. Despite the fact that it was so old and needed a lot of work, they ended up buying it because it had so much potential and even more important - they could afford it and still remodel it with what they had saved. Thirty days later, they moved in.
As soon as the moving truck left, it was just Nathan and Kym - they looked around and Nathan sighed and said
"Wow, a lot to do."
"Yeah," she said in a whisper, looking around slowly.
"What's wrong?"
She said "I don't know why, but I feel like we're being watched. Never mind, it's silly, i'm probably just tired."
He didn't say anything at the time, because he didn't want to upset or scare and spook her - but he had felt the exact same thing.
"Well...we're lucky you have all the expertise and wisdom to repair everything in the house, because there is a lot to be done and hiring someone would get very expensive."
"Let's get some sleep then, because we are going to be very busy tomorrow" and up the stairs they went for their first and last night in their new, but old home.
It started and finished on the first night, the exact same nightmare for both Nathan and Kym. Both dreamed of crying little girls, beaten until they stopped screaming and died. Then thrown into a dirt pit that was under their house where the floor came up, by the garage. Other dreams about young women forced into the same dirt pit as the already dead little girls, except the young women were still alive. In the dreams were screams for help, the sound of nails cracking and tearing away from the skin as they tried desperately to scratch their way out. The blood stains from their fingers were all over the bottom of the pit where they died.
The nightmare they both had seemed to last for days, like they were in slow motion.
During the nightmare, they both recognized that they were standing next to each other. He held her hand.
"I want to leave." said Kym.
"I don't know how, just hold my hand."
That's when they noticed arms starting to stretch out from the walls, trying to reach for them. One arm came out so fast it wrapped it's hand around Kym's leg and tried to pull her in. Kym screamed and tried to pry the hand loose, but it wouldn't budge.
"Help Me Nathan!"
He ran to the tool box and next to it sat an axe. He grabbed it and ran to Kym. He said
"Close your eyes Kym."
and he brought the axe down and chopped the hand at the wrist. The hand released it's grip and pulsated on the floor, it looked as if it was moving back over to Kym. Nathan grabbed Kym's hand and they ran away from the pit and the walls that seemed to have dead souls stuck within them.
They ran out of the house.
They both woke up at the same time at 6 am. It had only been 6 hours since they went to bed. As she got up, Kym had tears running down her face as she compared her dream to Nathan's and realized they were exactly the same. Kym and Nathan went to the area of the floor that they had dreamed of by the garage and pulled it up. She screamed and ran out of the house as Nathan looked in to see what had scared her. He stopped and suddenly he couldn't remember how to breath. He closed his eyes to see if he was imagining what he saw. He wasn't. He opened his eyes and the dirt pit from the nightmare was still there. It was full of bones, blood and body parts. He walked out of the house, put Kym in the car and went to the police station. They never went back to the house. Not even to get their stuff out of it.
Afterwards, the statement "They never went back to the house" ended up not being totally true. Both Kym and Nathan needed closure. Closure to them, was complete destruction of the house. Late one night, with a full gas can and lighter - they took it upon themselves to burn the house down. They did this to assure that no one else would suffer in that house and that nothing would ever be added to the dirt pit.
Years later, they were in a better place. Both in their mental state, which had taken awhile, but they had finally come to terms with what they had seen (burning the place down had a lot to do with closure on that). Also, they had saved up enough money to buy another house. Kym finally got her new home.
If only the quarter had landed on "heads" in the first place.....
